Through the Body, a Primary Exhibition of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, will be the largest exhibition of lens-based work by contemporary Chinese women artists to be mounted outside of China. Focusing on photography and video, the exhibition is structured by the Chinese concept Ti Shi, which can be defined as the act of learning through bodily experience. Each of the selected artists creates works that make visible an emerging range of Chinese femininities and offer new models for the contemporary experience of Chinese women. Gesturing toward new possibilities, this show foregrounds contemporary Chinese women\u2019s situations and articulates new gender identities informed by the rapid changes in China\u2019s traditional values and social and economic structures.

As a primary exhibition, Through the Body: Lens-based works by Contemporary Chinese Women Artists will be featured in CONTACT\u2019s magazine which has a readership of 50,000, as well as the CONTACT website. UTCA\u2019s promotional materials will include a newsletter, brochure, invitation, venue signage, street signs, and a social media campaign. The CONTACT festival advertises in over 15 Canadian and international arts and lifestyle publications and specific advertisements for the exhibition will appear in Prefix Photo and Ciel Variable.
\nThe Curators<\/p>\n

Yan Zhou was born in China and currently lives in Toronto. She holds a Master of Museum Studies from the University of Toronto. As an art curator, she has co-curated The Transformation of Landscape In Canada: The Inside & Outside of Being for an Art Museum in China, 2014; Through the Body: Lens-based works by Contemporary Chinese Women Artists for the University of Toronto Art Centre, 2014, Earthly Inspiration: The Expression And Process of Craft for Toronto Pearson International Airport, 2011. She is also the founder and curator of Montagneau Poetry & Art collaborative project since 2012.<\/p>\n

She is also a poet and translator, who has published translations of Rilke, Ezra Pound, Al Purdy, Roo Borson, John Reibetanz, Andy Patton and many others. Currently she is working on translation of the Pulitzer Prize winner Sharon Olds’ Stag\u2019s Leap and The Selected Works of Elizabeth Bishop.<\/p>\n

Fu Xiaodong is an independent curator and young critic based in Beijing. She is the Art Director of Space Station \u2013 an art center founded by her in 2009 to promote experimental art programs \u2013 and the Executive Chief Editor of the magazine \u2013 Fine Arts Literature. She once taught in the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Art and worked as an editor for many professional art magazines, such as Fine Arts Academy, Contemporary Art News and Art China. She was also the Art Director of T Space in Beijing. Since 2003, she has organized several contemporary art exhibitions for art museums, art centers, galleries and other art institutions in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, including: Homesickness – Memory and Virtual Reality, Chinese Freedom : Contemporary Artistic Text in the Post-Totalitarianism Society, “NEW VISTA – The Phenomenon of Post-Tradition in Contemporary Art”, “New Interface”, “Removing The Ladder”, “Insomnia” and others. In addition, she has been writing for various media and been invited to be the judge for several international young artists competitions.<\/p>\n

Matthew Brower is a Lecturer in Museum Studies in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. He has curated exhibitions in historical and contemporary art including Mieke Bal: Nothing is Missing (2009), Gord Peteran: Recent Works (2009), and Threatened, Endangered, Extinct (2014). He has co-curated three previous primary exhibitions for the CONTACT Festival: The Brothel Without Walls (2010), Suzy Lake: Political Poetics (2011), and Collective Identity \u2502Occupied Spaces (2012). He writes on issues in animal studies, the history and theory of photography, and contemporary art and is the author of Developing Animals: Wildlife and Early American Photography (University of Minnesota Press 2010).<\/p>\n
