展览前言 | Exhibition Preface:

“In the process of earth making, the Southeast China was setting in,” it says in the first chapter of The Stone Story. Mountain collapsing, southeast corner of earth sinking, and the story begins.

Interpreting the theme of our exhibition in that way, “spring” exists as the time point while “earth sinking” would be a transitional phrase in the broken word, a suspense.

Early in our preparation, the artists once asked us about the meaning behind it. “Nothing particular. Just take it literally.” We explained.

And this kind of answer often entices more imagination. No one knows what grotesque pictures those artists would visualize in their minds. And the images related to the word also have subtle influence on the way their look at the works they’ve accomplished. “Does this one go with the theme? Or what else can I create given this title?” Those considerations may jump over the sense of “continue” in the transition, and break the contextual consistency in his own works.

In Wuhan, spring is really short, just an interval swiftly skipping by us, connecting last winter to a fresh year. And we know that summer is upon us again. This special feeling for spring comes back to me every year and it’s like creating things in a studio, with expectations for surprises to come along the way.

Like The Stone Story, tacit meanings are left in the air for those who can grasp it. Those visual, expressive, low-tech or seemingly-smart “everyday wits” are met with splitting voices. Even the timeline could be reversed as in the story, closing it with an exposition.

No matter it is about the “transition”, the “surprise” or the “timeline”, it expects the curator to keep the exhibits to a same level of sight by setting the entry for them. We’ve failed to do that quite a few times. Besides, the artists we work with, they have different springs and sinking. So each works are covered with black canvas, like dark holes. When one piece is disclosed, the last one may already disappeared.
